Introduction

The 2012-13 La Liga season, officially known as the Liga BBVA for sponsorship reasons, was the 82nd season since its inception and was played from 18 August 2012 to 1 June 2013. It marked the 36th season of La Liga under its current name and was sponsored by BBVA, a Spanish banking group.

League Structure

La Liga is the top tier of the Spanish football league system and is contested by 20 teams, each playing 38 matches during the season. The league operates on a system of promotion and relegation, with the top three teams from the Segunda División (second tier) promoted to La Liga and the bottom three teams in La Liga relegated to the Segunda División.
