Bernard Hill, the English actor best known for playing King Théoden in the "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, has died at the age of 79.

Hill's agent confirmed his death to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday. No cause of death was given.

Hill was born in Manchester, England, on December 17, 1944. He began his acting career in the theater, appearing in productions of "Hamlet," "Macbeth," and "King Lear."

Hill made his film debut in 1972's "The Ruling Class." He went on to appear in a number of films, including "Gandhi" (1982), "Titanic" (1997), and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" (2002) and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003).
