Australian Rookie Furphy on Pacers Draft Day Surprise
Young Star Speaks Out on Draft Day Slide
Indiana Pacers' Draft Day Deal
Former University of Kansas standout Johnny Furphy has spoken out about his unexpected slide out of the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft, expressing both disappointment and gratitude for the opportunity to join the Indiana Pacers.
Furphy, born in Melbourne, Australia on December 7th, 2004, was projected as a lottery pick by many experts. However, a combination of factors, including injuries and a perceived lack of shooting ability, led to him falling to the second round, where he was selected by the Pacers with the 38th overall pick.
"Obviously, I was a little disappointed not to go in the first round," Furphy said in a recent interview. "But I'm also incredibly grateful to the Pacers for giving me this opportunity. I'm excited to be here and prove that I can play at this level."
Furphy's journey to the NBA has been a remarkable one. He only began playing basketball at a high level as a teenager and quickly emerged as one of the top prospects in his country. He helped lead the University of Kansas to a Sweet 16 appearance this past season and was named to the All-Big 12 Defensive Team.
Despite his impressive achievements, concerns about Furphy's shooting ability lingered. In his sophomore season at Kansas, he shot just 29.7% from three-point range. However, Furphy believes that this aspect of his game is improving and will continue to develop.
"I know I need to work on my shooting, and I'm putting in the time," Furphy said. "I'm confident that I can become a consistent shooter at this level."
Furphy also received words of encouragement from his new head coach, Rick Carlisle. According to Furphy, Carlisle expressed his belief in the young player's potential and told him that he would be given the opportunity to prove himself.
"Coach Carlisle told me that he's excited to have me on the team and that he's going to give me a chance to show what I can do," Furphy said. "That means a lot to me, and I'm eager to get on the court and start contributing."
The Pacers, who finished 45-37 last season, are hoping that Furphy can help them take the next step and contend for a championship. The young Australian says he is ready for the challenge.
"I'm here to win," Furphy said. "I'm going to work hard every day to improve my game and help this team achieve its goals."
